What a shame. I don't think Intel is acting in pure self-interest as JP insinuates, and I have a feeling that not is all well in the house of OLPC.

I don't think there's much right on either side, to be honest. The OLPC apparatchiks are more than a little arrogant, and their "it's our way or the highway" mantra is wearing pretty thin. I'd also be very careful about the "non-profit organization" tag - the sums of money involved in manufacturing and distributing the OLPC are HUGE, and for sure the commercial partners are not working on a cost-only basis. There are profits being made somewhere, we just don't know where.

Whoever is advising Intel on their PR has obviously been on vacation. Not only has this done untold damage to a fabulous education program for developing countries but also to the Intel brand!

Of course, who's surprised that a corporation would sabotage a public education initiative? If they're going to educate people, they want to get paid. And not just for the education - oh no, they want compensation for the fact that these children, when educated, won't be stupid enough to buy the crap sold by the other companies owned by intel investors. When you educate people, you reduce corporate profits - intel knows this, and they behave accordingly. Funny that "educated" (indoctrinated?) people have so much trouble figuring this out, despite the overwhelming evidence constantly spitting in their faces.

I am also disappointed at Intel's apparent behaviour. I was thinking my next computer would be intel processor based, but I'm leaning back towards AMD now. That would be two AMD's in a row - first for performance/price and now for ethical reasons. Intel stock isn't looking so good.

Intel should be banned from all education sales for this kind of ruthless and short-sighted behavior that only harms childern all of the world including many millions in the U.S.. I have started telling everyone who will listen about Intel's evil. Shocking really. As someone who spends millions every year on Intel products, I am done with them.

Stop buying Intel.
